Your website can look spectacular and still be handing customers to the competition. The culprit isn't visible at first glance: it's speed. The data is overwhelming, and every load second has a real price.

The data you need to know

  • 53% of mobile users abandon a site that takes more than 3 seconds to load.
  • Every extra load second drops conversion by 4% to 7%.
  • Speed is a Google ranking factor: a slow website ranks worse, regardless of your content.
  • Two out of three mobile searches that exceed 5 seconds end the same day without a click.

Translate that to your business: if you receive 1,000 monthly visits and your website takes 5 seconds, you're losing dozens of prospects and rankings without realizing it.

The most common causes of slowness

  • Giant unoptimized images: 5 MB photos that should weigh 200 KB. This is the number one cause.
  • Unnecessary JavaScript: libraries and scripts loaded even when unused. Every line is processing time on the visitor's phone.
  • Slow hosting: a cheap shared server responds half-heartedly; the visitor waits before receiving the first response.
  • No CDN: content travels from a single server, far from your user.
  • Blocking fonts: typefaces that prevent text from rendering while they download.
  • Overloaded CMS: templates and plugins dragging dozens of scripts.

How Google measures your speed

Google uses three real-experience metrics called Core Web Vitals:

  • LCP: how long the main content takes to load (target: < 2.5 s).
  • INP: how long your website takes to respond to interaction (target: < 200 ms).
  • CLS: how much the layout shifts while loading (target: < 0.1).

You can see your exact situation on PageSpeed Insights and in Google Search Console, which alerts you if any metric is in the red.

How to fix it (in order of impact)

  1. Optimize images: modern formats (WebP/AVIF), correct dimensions and lazy loading. This solves half the problem.
  2. Remove what you don't use: scripts, libraries and plugins nobody loads.
  3. Upgrade hosting: SSD or cloud servers, and a CDN to serve content from near the user.
  4. Load fonts smartly: font-display: swap and only the weights you use.
  5. If the CMS is the problem, consider the switch: an architecture like Next.js generates static pages that load in milliseconds.

Speed is an investment, not an expense

Every speed improvement translates into conversion and rankings. A website that loads in 1 second instead of 5 isn't "slightly better": it's a different business.
